Bamboo Sources

Anisotropy would like to thank Rod and Susan from Purangi Garden Accommodation. We visited their residence in Hahei last week and were able to cut down a large quantity of green and black bamboo for use in our structure. Their website is http://purangigarden.co.nz/ and they have a range of different types of accommodation including a fascinating Yurt! It was well worth the trip. Many thanks Susan.

Initial Research

This was some of our initial research into nature's ways of growing tall. http://asknature.org/strategy/7e5683b29f576ebcb7b39f567b7768c2

Scroll Work

We could achieve something amazing with the right lighting....

Weaving

I will also check out what we could do with drilled holes and weaving.

Scroll Work

I thought we could also consider scroll-work. This is easy to do on the scroll saw. Also, we are able to split small pieces on the saw.

Decoupage

I will also look into Decoupage, a French technique that involves decorating wooden furniture with paper. There are two variations - one where the entire surface is covered with paper, the other where small cutouts decorate the surface, and the result is varnished until the surface looks like an inlay.

IMAGINE THE POSSIBILITIES WITH LAZER-CUT PAPER!

Mosaic Inlays

As a teenager I dabbled in Mosaicing and did some work for this company. Unfortunately it looks like the Auckland store may have closed down, but we can order online. This kind of tile comes either in tiny squares or sheets which we can cut to any size/shape. I will try out an inlay with the bamboo.

Latest Ideas plus Animation Video

We critted yesterday and presented our latest ideas regarding the structure and design drivers.
After looking into the way bamboo grows we found links to the city which we have incorporated into our design.
The "rhizome" is the root structure for bamboo. It is a shallow root system but extremely dense and enables a stable foundation for the bamboo shoots to grow so tall. Comparing this to the city, we noticed that the structure is similar to the underground of a city with a dense network of pipes, services, carparks and underground railways etc. Above ground, there are similarities to the downtown city with a mixture of buildings rising to different heights. We considered the idea of density where, at the base of the bamboo forest, there is a large concentration of bamboo. However, moving upwards, the density lowers as the shoots are not all the same height. A similar situation happens in the cross section of the city, at ground level there are many buildings, but moving upwards, the skyline gets less and less dense.
We also considered the relationship between bamboo and the city in plan. The bamboo rhizome grows outwards from a central bamboo shoot. This is similar to the way urban sprawl occurs with the city slowly growing outwards from the CBD.
We have interpretted this into our skyrise structure though raising the ground level. Our skyrise will not just represent the bamboo forest above ground but the entry to the structure will be through the "dense rhizome" of the sub-terra. The entrance will be a small tunnel surrounded by densely packed bamboo poles. "Above" ground, some of these poles will rise high above visitors to at least the 8 metre minimum height. On some of these poles we will attach ropes and harnesses to enable visitors to our structure the opportunity to climb the bamboo and experience the canopy of the forest.
An animation of this proposed idea is posted here.
